Receiving gifts is very pleasant for all of us. This is a fact. On the other hand, when it comes to giving gifts, it becomes a little complicated. Many questions flash through our minds, e.g., whether our gift will be liked or not, whether it will be of use or not, etc.; and thus, buying a gift becomes a challenging task. Now that Mother’s Day has arrived, we have researched the psychology of a favourite gift starting from this point … Here are the three research-based findings you can find useful while looking for the perfect gift, not only on Mother’s Day, but also on all special days …

1. MAKE THE OTHER PARTY FEEL THAT YOU HAVE OBSERVED HIM/HER:

As it is always said, ‘It is the thought that counts’ … On the other hand, researches show that gift receivers believe that gift givers do not observe them much and tend to buy the first gift that they can reach without running themselves into the ground, rather than considering the budget. If you want to give the perfect gift, observe the person that you will give a gift for a while. What style they dressing is, what they say they need, what they like and what they are recently interested in. We bet that a tip like ‘I wish I had bought the other colour of this model’, which you will hear from them incidentally will later allow you to see that the gift you give makes your beloved one feel much happier …

2. CHOOSE A GIFT THAT REFLECTS YOU:

Although it is important to observe the person you love as explained in the first item above, it is also essential that the gift you will give conveys the message ‘I care about you and I want to see you like this’ in the gift giver-receiver balance. This gives to the other person an extremely motivating information about how you see them. For example, if the person you will give the gift to is your mother, saying ‘I thought this would suit you very much’ after choosing a colourful model for her will make her feel that you see her much more dynamic and younger and the moral motivation given as such will be as pleasing as the gift.

3. PAY ATTENTION TO SENSUALITY:

When it comes to gift, many of us don’t actually like the ‘commercial’ message communicated behind the gift. No matter how ‘forced’ it may seem, researches show that there is an expectation of a gift on special days and not receiving gift(s) leads to disappointment, even if it is not said out loud. Therefore, consider the feelings of the other party when selecting your gift. An approach like ‘I had better get a gift certificate to allow them to buy what they want’ may sound attractive in theory; but, in practice, it will give the other party the message ‘I didn’t want to try hard’. Even if it may sound trite to you, a gift showing that you have made an effort for the person you love will create a great effect. Especially when you add a note expressing your feelings to the gift you have bought …

According to Faik Sönmez’s Mother’s Day statistics, top groups are generally the models most favoured by mothers. Knitwear leads the line, followed by patterned t-shirts, blouses, and shirts. Then dresses come next.
